With increased demand for on-campus housing, UMass Amherst and the University of Massachusetts Building Authority initiated a public-private partnership (P3) project for undergraduate, graduate, and family housing. Balfour Beatty Campus Solutions and Axium Infrastructure were the developer/investment team, and DiMella Shaffer and RFS partnered with Suffolk Construction for design-build delivery. University Village is a community specifically designed for UMass Amherst students with dependents. The project includes 142 two-bedroom units of approximately 1,000 sf per unit. Community amenities include a community center, playgrounds, and field.
Project sustainability goals included all-electric thermal energy systems, and zero on-site carbon emissions. In additional to considering sustainability goals in our design, RFS collaborated with the developer/investment team, the design-build team, and UMass Amherst, and worked for our design to respond to each party’s interests – budget, simplicity and durability, campus standards, etc.
