Technology, Design, and Safety Center

Keene State College
Keene, NH

The 55,000 sf Technology Design Center is home to three of Keene State College’s flagship academic programs: Safety and Occupational Health Science, Architecture, and Sustainable Product Design and Innovation. The facility also serves as a Regional Center for Advanced Manufacturing where training is offered to individuals looking to enter the manufacturing workforce.

The site design required consideration for 500-year flood plain and resiliency. Site soil conditions required pile-supported foundations with consideration for teaching space vibration tolerances. The building was an early exemplar for all-electric, zero on-site carbon thermal energy and one of the first three LEED Platinum Certified buildings in New Hampshire. Despite a physical connection to the campus central steam plant (No. 2 oil-fired) and abundant available steam, thermal energy is provided by air-source heat pumps, including air-to-air and air-to-water, with no connection to campus steam. A building-integrated 300 kW photovoltaic array provides 30% of annual building electric energy consumption. Operable windows equipped with BAS-integrated window sensors enable passive HVAC, reduce building EUI, and contribute to occupant wellness.
