Schneider, Mack, Dewey, and Ainsworth Halls

Norwich University
Northfield, VT

As the oldest private military college in the US, Norwich University’s Forging the Future campaign included ambitious goals for academic building renovation and new construction. Existing Schneider Hall (formerly Webb Hall), Dewey Hall, and Ainsworth Hall, all totaling 132,000 sf, were extensively renovated. Renovations include technology-enhanced classrooms and conference rooms, a neuropsychology lab, and faculty offices. To align campus academic space with evolving academic programs, a new four-story, 51,000 sf Mack Hall was constructed. Mack serves as home to the university’s College of Professional Schools, as well as its cybersecurity program.  Mack expands general-use classroom portfolio, and provides new lecture halls, specialty learning spaces, breakout spaces, and a 400-seat multipurpose auditorium.

MEP systems included demand-control ventilation, dedicated outside air ventilation with energy recovery, induction/chilled beam heating and cooling, daylight harvesting, and premium efficient lighting and controls. For the Schneider, Dewey, and Ainsworth renovations, MEP/FP systems and distribution pathways were designed to minimize impact to the important historic building characters. For Mack, creative MEP/FP distribution strategies were required, as floor-to-floor heights were limited by adjacent buildings and interconnections.
