Laconia Middle School

Laconia School District
Laconia, NH

For over 30 years, RFS and the Laconia School District have forged a unique partnership; during which the District has entrusted RFS to serve as prime consultant for over $75 million in capital improvement projects. Together with the District, RFS has selected and retained architectural partners suited for each project, while providing overall project management and coordination. The 118,000 sf, 750-student Laconia Middle School replaced an outdated and deficient 1960s facility. The new school includes classrooms, administrative spaces, a library/media center, cafeteria and kitchen, as well as a gymnasium and multipurpose room.

RFS developed a creative construction sequencing plan as part of the bid documents for public bidding, and the plan enabled school operations to occur throughout a 20-month construction period with minimal disruption. Civil engineering services included NHDES permitting incorporating the Shoreland Protection Act. The structural engineering design included extensive coordination with geotechnical consultants to develop the foundation design amid varying layers of unsuitable materials required several foundation solutions across the site. MEP systems design focused on energy efficiency and durability. The project earned CHPS Certification from the Northeast Collaborative for High Performance Schools, a non-profit organization that encourages school districts to design and build sustainable, high-performance learning environments to optimize children’s education. The CHPS Certification enabled the project to qualify for additional State Building Aid.
