RFS has been providing engineering services to Phillips Academy to maintain and improve their district steam distribution system continuously since 2004. The district steam system services approximately 70 buildings, with a total area of over 1,400,000 sf. Portions of the system are over 75 years old.
Many institutions, including Philips Academy, aspire to move away from fossil fuel-derived steam as a thermal energy source; however, the process for doing so must be strategic and mission-critical district steam systems must continue to provide safe and reliable service until they are replaced with appropriate alternatives. RFS services have included master planning, as well as design and implementation assistance for over 20 district steam upgrade projects, resulting in reduced risk exposure to Philips Academy due to distribution system failure(s). As a secondary but notable benefit, through the upgrade projects, campus steam loads have been reduced by approximately 25%, due to major reductions in waste steam, un-recovered condensate, and thermal losses.
