Originally opened in 1897 as part of the Lowell Normal School, Coburn Hall is the oldest academic building on the UMass Lowell campus. The Coburn modernization project included extensive renovation of the original 64,000 sf building, and an addition of 15,000 sf. The building is now home to the College of Education and the Psychology Department, and an innovative center for research, exploration, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Major program elements include technology enhanced classrooms, labs and observation suites, work rooms, exhibit spaces, faculty offices, an event hall, and a makerspace.
The project achieved LEED Silver Certification, with MEP systems including demand-control ventilation, dedicated outside air ventilation with energy recovery, induction/chilled beam heating and cooling, daylight harvesting, and premium efficient lighting and controls. New MEP/FP systems and distribution pathways were designed to minimize impact to the important historic building character and finishes.
