Integration of student life and academics is the key feature for students and faculty at Keene State College’s Living and Learning Commons (LLC). A home for 350 first-year students, the 85,000 sf LLC includes living spaces, a family-style kitchen, lounge, café, game room, classrooms, and study areas.
RFS provided civil, MEP/FP, technology, and energy engineering services in support of the project, endeavoring for sustainable design to enable this no onsite carbon emissions building. Heating, air conditioning, and domestic hot water systems include all-electric heat pumps with a hybrid of geo-source and air-source energy. The HVAC design includes dedicated outdoor air systems, air-side energy recovery, demand-control ventilation, and high efficiency pumps and motors. The lighting design includes LED lighting and daylight monitoring with automated dimming, achieving a power density level approximately 30% below Code-allowed.
